ACTIVIST URGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO LEAVE GUNS HOME AFTER POLICE SHOOTING

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —A Kansas City community activist called for calm in the wake of afatal police shooting over the weekend.

Ron Hunt said he still has questions about what happened early Sunday near Sixth Street and Myrtle Avenue, but he’s also grateful for good relationships with Kansas City police. Officers were sent to the neighborhood before sunrise Sunday after a report of a suspicious man with a gun. Police said when they encountered the man, Eugene Turner, 28, he startedfiring at them. Officers returned fire and Turner was killed. Police said they recovered a gun nearby.Hunt said he hopes people will wait for evidence in the case before making any judgments about what happened.He said unlike Ferguson, Missouri, police relationships in Kansas City are, for the most part, good.

“We have a good department. It’s not a perfect department, but I’m just trying to get a message out to young people that carrying weapons, carrying guns on you, on your person, what is the purpose for that? You know, if you have a gun, leave it at home,” Hunt said.

He said he does have questions about the use of deadly force when officers have Tasers and other nonlethal options available.

He said he’d like to organize a symposium soon that would get police and young people together to help answer those questions. (This story was posted at www.kmbc.com.)
