Driver in Fatal Kansas City Wrong-Way Collision Charged with DWI

One of the drivers involved in wrong-way collision in Kansas City that killed the other driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated, resulting in death.

The intoxicated driver was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 in a Cadillac Escalade when they crashed into another driver in a Ford Fusion. The accident occurred at 1:40 a.m. on April 1, 2019, at the intersection of the interstate and 87th Street in Kansas City.

The driver of the Ford Fusion, a 26-year-old man from Independence Kansas, was killed in the crash. The other driver, a 34-year-old Kansas City woman, was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police reported “an odor of intoxicants and… eyes [that] were watery, bloodshot and glassy,” according to an article from The Kansas City Star. The defendant also exhibited slurred speech and was tested for intoxication, the results of which showed that she was under the influence of alcohol while driving.

A DWI resulting in death is a felony in the state of Kansas. If the defendant is convicted, she could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

This story follows a similar incident we recently reported on, in which another Kansas woman was charged with DUI aggravated battery, as well as involuntary manslaughter and driving with a suspended license.

Deaths that occur as a result of drunk driving are absolutely preventable and heartbreaking. The carelessness of intoxicated drivers has caused far too many deaths — these drivers must be held responsible and these tragedies must be stopped.
