A 40-vehicle wreck on I-70 near Kansas City killed one person and injured several more, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The tragic accident occurred near the Oak Grove interchange. Westbound lanes of I-70 had to be closed down after the accident.
Kansas City was hit with severe weather and white-out conditions Friday afternoon. With multiple crashes involving passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers, MHP asked drivers to stay away from I-70 in eastern Jackson and Lafayette, Missouri.
Worse, this wreck should never have occurred. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations control what tractor-trailer drivers should do when weather conditions are severe. Clearly, several semi-trucks were disobeying those laws on that fateful day. This tragic wreck was foreseeable, preventable, and completely avoidable – if drivers were obeying the laws — laws designed to prevent these fatal crashes.
In Concordia, there was another crash that involved several semi-trailer trucks. The aftermath of the accident forced the interstate to shut down.
Troy Schulte, Kansas City’s city manager, is asking local businesses to allow workers to leave early to help alleviate rush hour traffic during the snowstorm.
