Charges were filed against 57-year-old Vicky L. Water after she caused a fatal car accident on Shawnee Mission Parkway in Merriam. She is charged with involuntary manslaughter, DUI aggravated battery, and driving with a suspended license.
It is alleged Water was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the morning she crashed into other vehicles at the intersection of Antioch Road and Hadley Street. The accident took the life of C. Duncan, a passenger in one of the cars involved in the crash. The driver of Duncan’s vehicle sustained injuries.
A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY
Drunk driving accidents such as this are tragic and should never occur. Drivers have a responsibility to ensure they are operating their vehicles safely. When an intoxicated individual gets behind the wheel, they are negligent in their duties as a driver.
The Shawnee Mission Parkway accident could have been avoided had the driver been sober or refused to drive drunk, and a life could have been saved. Now, the family of the deceased must cope with the loss of their loved one, and the individuals harmed in the accident must take care of their injuries.
HOLDING DRUNK DRIVERS RESPONSIBLE
The community needs full justice for preventable accidents like this one. By holding the driver responsible for their thoughtlessness, we send a message that drunk driving will not be tolerated, which could prevent similar events from happening in the future and increase community safety.
