INCREASE IN PLAYGROUND CONCUSSIONS

Most parents know about the danger of their child suffering a concussion in sports like football and soccer. These activities may not be the only ones that parents trying to keep their children protected from head injuries should be concerned about. A new study conducted by theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention found that around 21,000 individuals aged 14 and younger sustain traumatic brain injuries, which includes playground concussions, each year.

Monkey bar and swing sets are the two most common structures on playgrounds associated with playground concussions. Even properly constructed and maintained playground equipment poses a danger, however, poorly designed, constructed, or improperly maintained playground equipment increases the risk of injury for children.

The manufacturers of playground equipment have a legal duty to ensure their equipment is safe to play on, and can be held strictly liable if someone is injured by their product. Just like other products, playground equipment can be designed improperly, defectively manufactured, or can lack necessary warnings, leading to catastrophic accidents.

If your child has sustained a playground concussion or another type of traumatic brain injury while at a playground, you should consult with an experienced personal injury attorney. Steve Sanders is a civil prosecutor based in Kansas City.
